چکیده

Referee3: Review of the manuscript "Reconciling single chamber Mg/Ca with whole test d18O in surface to deep dwelling planktonic foraminifera from the Mozambique Channel“ by J. Steinhardt, C. Cleroux, L. de Nooijer, G.-J. Brummer, R. Zahn, G. Ganssen, and G.-J. Reichart. This manuscript presents a large data set of single specimen stable isotopes and single chamber Mg/Ca on four species of planktonic foraminifera from a sediment trap in the Mozambique Channel which is affected by eddies. These lead to slightly different conditions in the water column affecting foram geochemistry. The authors argue that differences in the two sets, i.e. eddy and non-eddy

Mg/Ca and Sr/Ca ratios in planktonic foraminifera: Proxies for upper water column temperature reconstruction

[1] Reliable temperature estimates from both surface and subsurface ocean waters are needed to reconstruct past upper water column temperature gradients and past oceanic heat content. This work examines the relationships between trace element ratios in fossil shells and seawater temperature for surface-dwelling foraminifera species, Globigerinoides ruber (white) and Globigerina bulloides, and d...

Tropical North Atlantic Subsurface Warming Events as a Fingerprint for AMOC Variability During Marine Isotope Stage 3

The role of Atlantic Meridional Overturning Circulation (AMOC) as the driver of Dansgaard-Oeschger (DO) variability that characterizedMarine Isotope Stage 3 (MIS 3) has long been hypothesized. Although there is ample proxy evidence suggesting that DO events were robust features of glacial climate, there is little data supporting a link with AMOC. Recently, modeling studies and subsurface temper...

Silicate Weathering and Carbon Cycle Controls on the Oligocene-Miocene Transition Glaciation

Changes in both silicate weathering rates and organic carbon burial have been proposed as drivers of the transient “Mi-1” glaciation event at the Oligocene-Miocene transition (OMT; ~23 Ma). However, detailed geochemical proxy data are required to test these hypotheses. Here we present records of Li/Ca, Mg/Ca, Cd/Ca, U/Ca, δO, δC, and shell weight in planktonic foraminifera from marine sediments...

Geochemical imprints of genotypic variants of Globigerina bulloides in the Arabian Sea

Planktonic foraminifera record oceanic conditions in their shell geochemistry. Many palaeoenvironmental studies have used fossil planktonic foraminifera to constrain past seawater properties by defining species based on their shell morphology. Recent genetic studies, however, have identified ecologically distinct genotypes within traditionally recognized morphospecies, signaling potential reper...
